Winter on Long Island can make us all a little stir crazy. You can’t exactly tell the kids to “go out and play’ when it’s 15°F outside. There are, however, a ton of fun family activities to do during the Long Island winter months. Here are seven ideas for outings to help you make it through the winter.
Take a seal watching cruise. Winter is peak season to see the harbor seal population throughout Hempstead Bay. The Captain Lou Fleet, in conjunction with the Riverhead Foundation, sails out of Freeport harbor on select Saturdays and Sundays from now until April.
Spend a day at the Air and Space Museum. The Long Island Cradle of Aviation Museum features over 75 air and space craft, a planetarium and a dome theater. With 30 hands-on exhibits, there is something for everyone in your family to enjoy. The museum is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9:30am-5pm.
Go ice skating. Long Island is home to over 15 indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks. The outdoor rinks are weather-pending, so we advise calling ahead before you lace up your skates. There are plenty of indoor/outdoor ice skating rinks in the Long Island and New Your City area.
Hit the slopes. While we may not exactly live in the mountains, Long Island does have some pretty hilly spots that are perfect for sledding, snowboarding and skiing. Bethpage State Park offers straight paths for cross-country skiers, as well as various size hills for beginner and advanced snowboarders and sledding enthusiasts
Crack the code. Escape rooms are the latest craze in indoor entertainment. You and your friends are given 60 minutes to work together, solve puzzles and break out of a locked room. Certain escape rooms have age requirements, so be sure to check with the venue before you you’re your room.
Eat out. Long Island Winter Restaurant Week runs from January 22-29, 2017. Over 100 restaurants are participating throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Participating restaurants will serve a three-course dinner prix fixe for $27.95 all night, every night they are open except Saturday when the menu may only be offered until 7 p.m. Each restaurant will serve a unique prix fixe menu with a minimum choice of three appetizers, three entrées and three desserts.
See a show. Long Island is home to some phenomenal theaters. From Bellport’s Gateway Theater to the Merrick Center and Theater for the Arts, you are sure to find a play that the entire family will enjoy. Here is a list of performing arts centers in Nassau and Suffolk County.
